The best Ayurvedic drinks: our favourite recipes

Of course, a diet that is good for the body also includes drinking enough and, above all, the right things. We have collected the best Ayurvedic drinks that can keep you fit and healthy. From the power mix for hot summer days to the golden milk that provides cosy warmth in the cold season, there is something for every dosha and every taste!

Healthy drinking - how does it work?

Nothing works without drinking, as the Ayurveda teachings also know. However, not all drinks are the same: If you want to drink according to Ayurvedic principles, you should, for example, drink warm drinks - at any time of the year.

In Ayurveda, there is also the principle that nothing should be drunk for 30 minutes before and after a meal. This ensures that your digestive fire (Agni) is or remains optimally ignited. If you eat something very solid and dry, you can of course drink something in between, but preferably in moderation.

The question of all questions remains: How much fluid is actually healthy? There is no general answer to this question, because your body basically tells you what is good for it and what is not.

As a guideline, however, you can use a simple calculation: Multiply your body weight in kilograms by 0.03 - and you have the daily amount of water in litres that is recommended for you. But here too, the proof of the pudding is in the eating! And here they come, the Ayurvedic drinks that are our absolute favourites!

For the whole year: the classics among the Ayurvedic drinks

In a list of Ayurvedic drinks, the perennial favourites must of course not be missing: Ayurvedic spiced milk, rice water and ginger water are simply always good and can be prepared in no time at all.

Ayurvedic spiced milk

The strongly spiced milk drink not only has a detoxifying effect, but is also wonderfully calming. And if you are still a little hungry before bedtime but don't want to eat any more, the spiced milk fills your stomach wonderfully so that you can fall asleep completely relaxed.

This drink is good for both Vataand Pitta types. Only if you are a Kapha person should you be careful - the spiced milk is not ideally suited for this dosha. You need the following ingredients to prepare 4 servings:

  • 800 ml fresh whole milk
  • 2 pinches saffron powder
  • 1 tbsp freshly grated ginger
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg, alternatively 7 cardamom pods
  • 2-4 tbsp. whole cane sugar

Mix these ingredients in a pot and let the drink simmer for 5 minutes. Stir the mixture again and again and do not set the heat too high. Your relaxing drink is ready!

Rice water

When you follow an Ayurvedic diet, you take breaks of 5-7 hours between meals. This can seem like a long time if you are just starting out in the world of Ayurveda.

Rice water helps in such situations: it is filling and nourishing and will easily get you to the next meal.

Practically, this classic suits all types, if necessary you can of course enrich it with a powder for your dosha.

You need:

  • A handful of basmati rice
  • 2-3 litres of water
  • A little Himalayan salt, ginger and black pepper to taste.

Boil the rice in the water until it starts to dissolve. Now you just have to pour the mixture through a sieve and collect the rice water in a thermos flask.

Ginger water can simply strengthen the Agni - the digestive fire.

Ginger water

It is impossible to imagine an Ayurvedic diet without the ginger tuber. You can also incorporate it into your day at any time in the form of a drink and thereby strengthen your Agni. Vata as well as Pitta and Kapha are well advised with it.

All you need for the ginger water is:

  • 1 litre water
  • 30-50 g fresh ginger

Chop the ginger and let it simmer in the water for 5-10 minutes. The water should reduce to a third of the original amount if possible. The more water evaporates, the more intense the taste and effect of the drink.

Drink the ginger water as warm as possible and in small sips.

By the way, even without the addition of ginger, hot water is an Ayurvedic classic that is (almost) always suitable for every type. It is recommended to drink half a cup of it every half hour with 2-3 sips at a time.

With ginger or without: you decide!

For spring and summer: Ayurveda Power Cocktail

The Ayurvedic power cocktail is wonderfully refreshing, especially on hot days. It gives you more energy and drive than the strongest coffee and is also really good for you. But be careful: don't be tempted to drink the power cocktail cold in summer. By the way: This drink is good for all three constitution types.

For autumn and winter: Golden milk

The golden milk gets its name from its unique golden-yellow colour and is often drunk in winter. It stimulates digestion in all types and has a detoxifying effect. One portion is made from:

  • 1 cup almond or soy milk
  • 1 tsp turmeric paste
  • If desired, add ½ tsp each saffron threads and cardamom.
  • 1 tsp virgin coconut oil
  • Maple syrup, honey or pepper to taste

With the right drinking habits, we do ourselves more good than one might think at first glance. The above recipes are very easy to prepare and taste good at any time of the day or year.
