Chakras: The importance of the chakras

Only when our chakras are free can energy flow unbound through the body and we are happy and content. After physical or mental stress, however, the chakras are sometimes blocked and need to be cleansed so that we can regain our inner balance. But what are chakras actually? How can they be activated and opened and what is it about the colours? You can find out all this here.

What are chakras?

The chakras are the energy centres of our body. They serve as a connection between the physical and the subtle body and have the task of supplying us with life energy. There are seven chakras in total, arranged vertically along the spine, each responsible for a specific area. Each of these centres should be constantly in motion and rotating so that the energy can also flow well.

In a way, the chakras are a mirror of our consciousness. When we feel balanced and happy, all energy centres are open and working exactly as they should. However, when we are anxious or disturbed, blockages can arise and the chakras contract. The energy can then no longer flow unhindered. As a result, we feel unwell and are not in our centre. With cleansing methods, however, these blockages can be released again and new strength can be drawn.

This is how the chakra colours result

Colours are an important part of chakra work. Through their different rotations and frequencies, each chakra is assigned a certain colour. If one wants to support a certain chakra, it can help, for example, to consciously surround oneself with the respective colour.

This can happen by wearing coloured clothing, visualising during meditation or by observing the respective colours in nature. But also small accessories in the respective chakra colours can support the chakra in its work. Try it out once!

The meaning of the seven chakras & how to open the chakras

All seven main chakras have their own meaning and fulfil a specific function. If you notice disturbances in body and mind, it may be that a certain chakra is blocked. In this case, it can help to stimulate the chakra through specific measures in order to improve the energy flow again.

Here we show you these individual energy centres from bottom to top. You will learn which centre has which chakra colour, what it is responsible for and what you can do to open the respective chakra. Get ready for new life force!

1. root chakra

This chakra is also called the base chakra and is our connection to everything earthly. Accordingly, it stands for grounding, security and stability. It is located in the pelvic floor and is associated with the colour red.

  • Blockages of the root chakra: Disturbances of the root chakra show themselves mainly through inertia, insecurity or sluggishness. Problems with bowels or weight can also occur.
  • This is how it is activated: Conscious physical activities, such as movement or dance, stimulate this chakra and provide more stability in life. Nutritionally, nuts, potatoes and legumes can ground it. If the root chakra is opened, it shines again full of new life energy, self-confidence and assertiveness.

2. sacral chakra

This chakra is located about a hand's breadth below the navel and is the centre for joy of life, sexuality and emotions. It brings creative power and the enthusiasm for sensual pleasures and has the colour orange.

  • A blocked sacral chakra: If the chakra is not free, we notice this in a reduced libido and tension in the back or muscles. We also experience more negative emotions such as anger, sadness or jealousy.
  • Cleanse the sacral chakra: If the chakra is bulky, it needs to be made to flow again, and water in particular helps with this. Flowing movements such as swimming or drinking water or herbal teas supports the cleansing of this chakra. Painting and other creative activities can also help. Afterwards we feel joy of life again and a better self-esteem.

3. solar plexus chakra

Also called the navel chakra, this chakra is the seat of our personality and self-responsibility. It is responsible for our willpower, our intellect and our assertiveness. It is located at about the level of the stomach directly above the solar plexus and is yellow in colour.

  • Disturbances in the solar plexus chakra: A blockage of this chakra shows itself through restlessness, control compulsion and materialism. Physical consequences can also be overweight, stomach pain or lack of strength.
  • Open the navel chakra: The chakra can be supported with sunbathing, deep abdominal breathing and fragrances such as lavender and chamomile. But whole grain products such as rice, bread or potatoes and spices such as chilli, ginger or cinnamon are also stimulating. This makes you feel calmer, stronger-willed and gives you a sense of inner harmony.

4. heart chakra

Located directly above the heart, the heart chakra is the centre for love. This does not only mean romantic love, but also warmth, joy of heart and compassion towards all people. The colour of this chakra is light green.

  • When the heart chakra closes down: If doubts, coldness, vulnerability, fear and the lack of closeness spread, this can be a disturbance of the heart chakra. The skin, heart, lungs and circulation can also feel this.
  • Stimulate this chakra: Consciously engaging with our inner self can stimulate the chakra, as can herbal or aromatherapy. Green vegetables such as spinach, peas, cucumbers or lettuce do just as much good as lemon balm and thyme. When the chakra flows again, we are more hearty, helpful and confident.

5th throat chakra

The throat chakra stands for communication, clarity and individuality. It helps with self-confidence and personal expression. It is located directly at the larynx and is associated with the colour light blue.

  • An inhibited throat chakra: With a blocked throat chakra, our throat literally closes up, we become closed and inhibited in communication. Inflammations in the throat and pharynx and problems with the thyroid gland can follow. We no longer listen to the inner voice and have difficulties expressing ourselves.
  • Open the throat chakra: Eating fruit, honey, fruit juices or flax seeds can stimulate the chakra. Spending time by a blue lake and singing, writing and listening to music can also help. Afterwards, the ability to express ourselves improves and we go through the day with more self-determination.

6. brow chakra

Between the eyebrows is the brow chakra, also called the third eye. It is associated with the colour dark blue or violet and is considered the seat of intuition, the mind and inner wisdom.

  • A dense brow chakra: If the brow chakra is blocked, mood lows or a loss of reality can occur. One worries more and is plagued by stress and nightmares. Migraines or headaches also indicate a disturbed brow chakra.
  • This cleanses the brow chakra: When the chakra is activated, an alert mind, high consciousness and strong intuitive abilities are revealed. To achieve this, teas or juices should be drunk, much more important with this chakra is mental work. A dream diary and mindfulness meditations can help to return to the here and now.

7. crown chakra

The seventh chakra is the crown chakra and is located a few centimetres above the top of the head. It is the centre for spirituality, freedom and inner peace. The chakra is often depicted as white, transparent or violet.

  • A closed crown chakra: A blockage in the crown chakra often goes hand in hand with a life crisis. We feel aimless, unsettled and have problems sleeping. A general world-weariness or states of exhaustion can also occur.
  • Open this chakra: Incense, fasting or spending time in nature can stimulate the chakra. Conscious appreciation of oneself and other living beings also helps. When the energy flows properly again, one is in harmony with oneself and the world and feels a deep inner peace.

Chakra meditation to open the chakras

As you can see, wearing a certain colour or other targeted measures can stimulate the individual centres. However, you can experience a particularly deep cleansing of body and soul with a holistic chakra meditation. All chakras are activated one after the other and the life energy gets going again.

Here's how it works:

Sit up straight and with an erect spine. It is important that you are as relaxed as possible and not tense. Now inhale deeply and send the breath gently upwards from the root chakra step by step through all the energy centres. Stay a little while at each chakra and visualise its colour.

Now ask yourself the following questions:

  • What sensations can I feel?
  • Do I feel any tension?
  • What does this chakra tell me?
  • If you feel tension in the chakra, now try to release it. Feel new, fresh energy flowing into the chakra with each inhale, while tension is released on the exhale. As soon as you feel the chakra becoming freer, move to the next one until your energy can flow freely through your body again.

In our chakra meditation you will find detailed instructions for working through all the chakras. If you do this meditation regularly, you will learn to pay attention to small changes in your body and mind and to assign them better. Through cleansing measures your energy will flow better again, you will feel inner harmony and balance.
